Pinot Noir is one of my favorite grape varieties, even though it is one of the most sensitive grape and very difficult to grow. This thin-skinned grape is a notoriously temperamental variety but I like it for its versatility and for the ability to produce extraordinary champagnes and spectacular red wines. Burgundy is his “natural” home for extraordinary red wines. You can find it in the most famous vineyards and wineries, where you can taste the best single-varietal wines from Pinot Noir, which are hunted each year by the wine collectors.
The trademark of Pinot Noir is its acidity, delicacy and finesse. All of these characteristics can be obtained only in the cooler climates, they tend to disappear in warmer climates and hot weather.
That’s why I consider, that in Romania, the best place for Pinot Noir is in Transylvania, and if you want a very good red wine the best place to be is in the wine region of Lechința.
In Lechburg Pinot Noir 2018, I discovered a ruby red wine with mulberry and strawberry flavors, with a smooth touch of mushrooms. It is a medium-bodied wine, with bright acidity that imprints pleasant notes of ripe cherries, an elegant structure with silky tannins, with a complex spectrum of flavors, passing from raspberry to cloves and a touch of vanilla. It is a very well balanced wine with a good prospects of maturation in the bottle.
